Thought from the Vicarage - Autumn 2000

I will never forget the moment, twenty years ago, when Andrew, our first child, was born. It was an amazing thing to believe, that my wife, Teresa, and I, had created this wonderful new life.

I will never forget too, holding him in my arms, and thanking God, and then thinking “but what do I do now”? Bearing children is an awesome thing; looking after them, caring for them, and nurturing them is a heavy responsibility. But most of us who are parents, though, have never been taught anything about rearing children, and therefore struggle along with varying degrees of success.

The punchline of one cartoon said this: “No matter what we teach our children, they insist on behaving just like their parents!” You may smile, but our children learn to behave as they do by watching us. What a sobering thought!

You may teach what you know, but you can only reproduce what you are.

With that in mind, here at Bearwood Church, we felt it would be useful for all parents on the estate to have the opportunity to take part in a new Parenting Course, called ‘Positive Parenting’. It will include subjects such as Communication Skills, Discipline and Setting Love Limits. It will begin on Tuesday 19 September at 7.30 pm, and will run for five weeks.

We are not aiming to preach at you; we just want to create an opportunity for all parents to be the best parents that they can be. Please ring the office on 579562 if you would like to take part in the course.
